Become a Mentor
The most important qualification for a Mentor is to want to help Consumers effectively navigate the IHSS system and supporting them in maintaining their independence in the community of their choice. Mentors achieve this by coaching Consumers through finding, hiring and working with their Provider of choice and assisting Consumers in connecting with other services that help them meet other essential needs.
Mentors have a portfolio of Consumers with whom they work over a 6-month period. Mentors must be available to work a minimum of two, four-hour shifts per week and be available on the 3rd Monday of each month, 10am to 2pm, for the Mentors Meeting. Mentors must be willing to travel throughout San Francisco and have personal experience in any of the following areas:
- transitioning from institutional living settings to community living;
- living independently in the community;
- being a present or past IHSS Consumer;
- working as an IHSS Provider.
As of 4/1/21, Mentors are part-time employees of the Public Authority and are paid $17.50 per hour.
